Mario Moccagatta co-ordinates a team led by Federico Curtaz and Beppe Caviola in charge of the vineyards and the cellar, respectively.

Thanks to the strict control of the amount of grapes cultivated per acre Gavi wines have succeeded in becoming an important rival to some of the best white wines in the world. However the best wine in the cellar is not produced from Gavi grapes but from Rivalta, a farm dedicated to the production of red wine.

Two experts have helped Moccagatta transform their production from making good but ordinary wines into producing great wines which are able to threaten the leaders in the world market.

Barbera del Monferrato Rivalta 1997 is just one example of these wonderful wines. Such a great, rich and intelligent Barbera wine has never been tasted before and it fully deserves its Tre Bicchieri (three-glass) distinction.

Dolcetti wines are also extremely good with the d’Giusep wine being slightly better than Bric Maioli but that’s not all.

Gavi Monterotondo 97 embodies perfectly the new farming philosophy used by Stefano and Massimo, sons of Mario Moccagatta. This wine is at the top of DOCG (guaranteed controlled denomination of origin) wines because of its brilliant golden colour and the strong flavor of honey and butter which can hide only for a few seconds the taste of tropical fruits and flowers. This taste is well balanced with the flavors of the barrel and other aromas which promise an excellent ageing of this wine. The taste is velvety and full bodied but fresh with a wonderful aftertaste.

We think Pas Dosè 92 deserves its two-glass distinction while Müller Thurgau, not typical to the area, deserves its one-glass distinction.
