Immersed in the splendid frame of the Amalfi Coast, the “Taverna del Capitano” was reconstructed from an old fisherman’s cottage in the heart of the bay of Marina del Cantone. Here, the entire Caputo family celebrates the culinary traditions of the Sorrentine Peninsula.

Hospitality and the spirit of initiative have always characterized the Caputo family, since the days in which Nerano was a small village of fishermen and farmers, whose economy was founded solely on self-sufficiency.

Grandfather Alfonso was for many years the reference point of the village, with a series of small enterprises from a grocery store to a wood oven, from a water mill to an oil-press and a small business dedicated to supplying electricity to the entire village, to the mooring jetty of Marina del Cantone.

His son Salvatore abandoned the life of a long-distance sea captain and decided to guide his own ship on land, so as to offer a suitable welcome to tourists. After restructuring the old fisherman’s cottage, and baptizing it “Taverna del Capitano” (the Captain’s Inn), his destiny completes its final move when he meets Grazia, who hides a secret and burning passion for recipes and the art of cooking. Nowadays the entire family works here, and has done for generations now, at least three of which have brought their own patrimony of experience to the business, adding different methods and tones.

In the dining room, the patron Salvatore and the maître Claudio di Mauro cordially welcome guests. Grazia Casa, Salvatore’s wife, manages the kitchen with a professionalism earned at the best tables in Europe. Their son Alfonso and his wife Stephanie Charnay work with her, with attention to new techniques and gastronomic trends. In the cantina, Mariella, sommelier, dedicates ample space, amid the great Italian red and white wines, to the most prized Campania labels. Enriched too by a supply from the great French chateaux, the enological new frontiers and a particular selection of dessert and meditation wines.

What can you try at the Taverna del Capitano?

Base products from the sea and the Mediterranean exalting the naturalness and integrity of a cuisine that clings to tradition.

Fish above all, fresh fish from the waters of the Gulfs of Naples and Salerno, fished every day 365 days a year by the fishermen of Marina del Cantone. The fish is handled very little. Rapid cooking times aim to alter the flavours as little as possible. But not only fish: in a privileged position are the meats from farmyard animals from trusted and long-standing suppliers, inherited from Grandfather Alfonso. The vegetables? From selected biological cultivation, used with respect to the season. The bread and pasta are homemade each in accordance with old customs. So we offer the full Mediterranean cuisine!

Just a few steps from the restaurant, up along the narrow road leading to the sea, you will find the cantina of the Taverna del Capitano. Catapulted into a dream, broken against the rocks, stranded on the pebbly beach and crystalline seabed of Marina del Cantone, the perfect reproduction of a Sorrentine gozzo fishing boat in cherry wood.
Wines from all over the world framed in a unique stage setting. On entering, taking care not to wet your feet, lower your head in order to pass through the rift opened on its impact with the rocks and you will find yourself inside the gozzo.

It was awarded the Bacardi Martini L’Espresso prize as “best cantina of the year 2000”, for the importance of its enological supply and the richness of its wine list.
