What to do when you invite someone round, how to set the table, how to arrange the seating.
A few simple rules for you to remember.
You
can lay the table in two ways: the Latin way and the American
way.
With the former you use a big tablecloth, with the latter
textile or plastic place mats.
For an elegant dinner you should not use any printed tablecloth
nor nylon mats.
Fork, knife and spoon must be placed on the sides of the dish
according to the order they are used, i.e. the ones which are
further from the dish are those which are used first.
The
spoon must be placed turned up, the blade of the knife must be
placed towards the dish; dessert knife and fork are placed
horizontally, in front of each dish; fruit knife and fork must
be placed on the fruit plate.
As
far as glasses are concerned there is a large one for the water
(mineral water is served from the bottle), a smaller glass is
used if white wine is served; mid-large glasses are used with
red wine. Finally if there is a dessert wine on the table one
more glass is usually placed on the table with a special shape (colored
or slender), or flute in case champagne is served.
