Set on a hill shaded by turkey oak trees, Canonica a Cerreto was built as a monastery for Siena’s clergy about a thousand years ago.
Located on the old border between the former republics of Siena and Florence, the monastery witnessed years of fierce fighting between the two rivals including the historic Battle of Monteaperti, described by Italy’s most famous poet, Dante Alighieri.
Just a half hour’s drive from Siena, Canonica a Cerreto is set in the scenic heart of the Tuscan countryside where the famous Chianti wines are produced. Built in the Medieval Ages as a monastery and summer villa for the archbishop of Siena, the villa has since changed its vocation to the making of wine and olive oil. It has also converted chambers once used by monks into modern apartments for guests seeking a quiet yet comfortable retreat.
Four apartments are available to guests, each with its own bathroom, kitchen and fireplace. Although the décor is distinct in each apartment, it remains faithful to the traditional Tuscan style. The windows offer a breathtaking view of the countryside, shared by a swimming pool open to all
guests.
Canonica a Cerreto offers the quiet delights of long, uninterrupted walks through the countryside. It is also a short drive away from the warm pleasures of thermal baths in the town of Rapolano where guests can relax after an active day in the sun.
The villa’s central location is perfect for day trips by car to San Gimignano, Monteriggioni, Montepulciano and other charming fortified towns for which Tuscany is
famous.
